Nietzsche was wrong, that's all. Maybe as a sort of general rule, you could say that people are only good due to fear of consequences, but it cannot be a universal.
Who would know if you ignored your integrity? You would. And for some people, that's enough.

This is an unfortunate and sad reality, but most of us need some form of countermeasure to reign in our own self-interest. Fortunately most healthy adults will stand up for themselves, which I think is one way to keep compassionate people—who are also self-interested—kind because it lets them know what is and what isn’t acceptable behavior.
